TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… SEPT. 2nd: Triple H is presented the World Title

SEPTEMBER 2, 2002 – MONDAY NIGHT RAW – MILWAUKEE, WI

Triple H is awarded the famed ‘Big Gold Belt’ (re-christened the WWE World Heavyweight Championship) by Eric Bischoff.

hhh02The championship and physical belt are reintroduced because Undisputed champion Brock Lesnar had signed an exclusive contract to Smackdown, taking the title with him.

Triple H was deemed the champion based on winning a #1 contender’s match for the Undisputed WWE Championship the previous week over the Undertaker. With RAW needing a champion of its own, the World title would serve as its ultimate prize. The WWE would operate in this format, with two world champions, until December 2013 when the belts were once again unified by Randy Orton.

  1. Literally handed. It pays to marry the boss’ Daughter. And then Triple H kept a death grip on it for much of the next 3 years. Mainly dropping to his buddies.
