TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… SEPT. 4th: The First Monday Nitro

DATELINE: SEPT. 4, 1995 – MALL OF AMERICA – MINNEAPOLIS, MN

lex-luger-nitro-debutThe first episode of WCW Monday Nitro is broadcast on TNT.

The show is remembered for its initial match, pitting Brian Pillman against Jushin Liger- as well as the surprise return of Lex Luger to WCW.

The Total Package walked out near the end of the show’s broadcast, after having spent the previous two plus years wrestling for the WWF. It was especially shocking to Vince McMahon, himself, considering Luger had just wrestled a match for the WWF the night before

Luger’s contract was then immediately expired, and he signed with WCW the morning of his appearance. This event set the tone for Nitro’s “anything can happen” atmosphere, as well as future talent raids that became a big part of The Monday Night War.
