TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY…. NOV 22nd: Enter The Deadman

DATELINE: NOV. 22, 1990 –  HARTFORD CIVIC CENTER – HARTFORD, CT

Mark Calaway makes his World Wrestling Federation television debut as The Undertaker at Survivor Series, as the mystery partner of Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team

Calaway had appeared as the character at television tapings just three days prior, but the pay-per-view would be The Deadman gimmick’s official, onscreen debut.

While some critics initially scoffed at the image of a funeral parlor worker for being too hokey, history will bear out an incredibly different tale. Calaway would take the character to heights that were unimaginable at the time, collecting championships and becoming a mainstay for Vince McMahon through good times, and bad.

After over 25 years in WWE, The Undertaker remains one of the company’s most legendary, mythic and enduring figures. Following his loss at WrestleMania earlier this year, Calaway shed the gloves and hat and walked away, leaving speculation about his retirement status. While some possible returns have been hinted, The Undertaker, himself remains quiet. In the meantime, fans are left to wonder about whether or not he will ever make opponents REST… IN… PEACE again.
