Final Battle 2017

DEC. 15, 2017 – THE MANHATTAN CENTER’S HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM – NEW YORK, NY

Welcome to TheGorillaPosition.com‘s LIVE coverage of Ring of Honor’s Final Battle 2017! We will be covering the show as it happens emanating from The Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, New York. Glad you could join us!

Before we get underway, a note about tonight’s coverage. For those of you who followed TheGorillaPosition.com‘s coverage of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s G1 Climax Tournament, you already have an idea of how this may work. For those that don’t, some disclaimers to get out of the way:

If you’re here for play-by-play, star ratings, or discussions about booking or finishes, you’re in the wrong house. Our tagline here at The Gorilla Position is, “Telling the stories of pro wrestling’s storytellers.” That is how the matches will be recapped – not move-for-move, but the story being told in the ring. Also, this is a live event, not Game of Thrones. There are spoilers here insofar as results.

Oh, and keep hitting refresh for the latest results after each match.

With that said, let’s waste no more time, because it’s show time!

A pretty concise video highlighting the key stories of Final Battle starts off the show.

Ian Riccaboni and Colt Cabana – your hosts for the evening – also serve to hype what we’re about to see and take us to our opener…

SPECIAL ATTRACTION MATCH: MATT TAVEN (with TK O’Ryan & Vinny Marseglia) vs. “THE AERIAL ASSASSIN” WILL OSPREAY

The leader of The Kingdom is out in full regalia.

Ospreay wastes no time flying at Taven. Taven, thanks to his CMLL experience, is up to the challenge and tries taking Ospreay down but Ospreay won’t stay grounded and rubs it in Taven’s face, faking a dive outside. Ospreay lives to regret it as Taven takes control after kicking Ospreay in the side of the head and wearing him down outside. Taven slows the pace, wanting Ospreay to wrestle his match and keep the air assault out of the equation. Ospreay gathers his bearings and mounts his comeback.

Ospreay pours it on but Taven’s experience serves him well as he evades a standing splash. Taven goes for a series of submissions, hoping the work he’s done is enough while toying with Ospreay at the same time. Ospreay has his opponent scouted as he maneuvers around Taven and goes for a knockout of his own.

Taven retreats to the outside and Ospreay takes out the rest of The Kingdom. Taven isn’t afraid to take advantage and looks to put away Ospreay inside after regaining advantage.  Finish comes when Taven spikes Ospreay with the C4 and scores the pinfall.

A bit of history leads us to:

GRUDGE MATCH – THE ADDICTION (CHRISTOPHER DANIELS & FRANKIE KAZARIAN) VS. WAR MACHINE (RAY ROWE & HANSON)

War Machine starts off looking to use their superior size – and rage – to straight mow down The Addiction. War Machine succumbs to The Addistion’s superior experience and speed as Daniels and Kazarian soon target Rowe with quick impact moves to break Rowe down.

Hanson looks to make a comeback but Daniels and Kazarian know how to use the ring and the ref to their advantage. Rowe is angered – which only plays into The Addiction’s game of throwing Rowe off of his. Hanson is finally able to come to his partner’s aid and all of them push themselves harder to take the victory, leaving all four men down. War Machine is able to rise and take the lead. Finish comes when War Machine hit the Fall Out on Daniels for the pinfall victory.

Marty Scurll wants to bring out Jay Lethal’s villainous side, leading us to…

DREAM MATCH, NON-TITLE – IWGP JR. HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION “THE VILLAIN” MARTY SCURLL vs. JAY LETHAL

Scurll adheres to the Code of Honor, shaking Lethal’s hand and displaying the (twisted) respect that drove him to request this match. Scurll is wrestling clean, including a clean break on the ropes. The announcers wonder if Scurll is actually showing respect or setting up another plan. Lethal doesn’t care either way, opening fire on Scurll. Scurll is able to turn the tide and draws a bull’s eye on Lethal’s arm, but Lethal is confident in his ability to handle the upstart. Lethal smartly conserves his energy while picking apart Scurll, building up to launching himself at Scurll outside. Lethal stays there top punish Scurll some before wanting to end it in the ring. Scurll reverses his fortune and steals Lethal’s strategy of slowly (albeit somewhat illegally) wanting to wear Lethal out, alternating between going after limbs and taking his air away. Lethal reverses gears and digs into his arsenal to take Scurll down.

Nor is Lethal afraid to take some tricks from someone else’s bag.

Sensing he’s in deep trouble, Scurll shoves Lethal into referee Todd Sinclair, taking him out of the equation to grab a chair. Scurll looks to pull a Guerrero special, throwing Lethal the chair then falling down. Lethal tries the chair on for size, allowing Sinclair to see both men down and a chair in play without knowing who did what. Lethal kicks into high gear and goes for broke to put Lethal away.

Lethal goes to the past again with a Figure 4, but Scurll knows enough to escape and still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Scurll tricks Sinclair with one umbrella long enough to blast Lethal with a second, but Lethal survives! Lethal plays into Scurll’s hands, hitting a low blow behind Sinclair’s back. Finish comes when Lethal hits the Lethal Injection after a low blow on Scurll to put him away with a pinfall.

Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta keep screwing up take after take in talking about how they want to be champions. And they have their chance.

ROH WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP – ROH WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE MOTOR CITY MACHINE GUNS (ALEX SHELLEY & CHRIS SABIN) vs. BEST FRIENDS (BERETTA & CHUCKIE T.)

Bathroom break. No, not the match lunkhead – before it.

Taylor and Sabin start things off with Sabin casually showing his ring skills. Taylor and Trent gain the advantage with Two Dog Knight – a vicious combination consisting of a face rake and falling senton. Shelly breaks up a congratulatory hug between the two, but they’re able to get it done on the outside.

Shelly joins Sabin in imploring the Best Friends to take things seriously, using their own irreverence to do so.

The irreverence may have been a ruse as Taylor and Beretta are able to isolate Sabin and unleash a merciless attack for the gold. Sabin and Shelly, however, have been teaming much longer than the Best Friends and decide to show them as such. Sabin and Shelly’s teamwork is impeccable, but the Best Friends match them as much as they can. It’s ultimately experience that plays the deciding card. Finish comes when Sabin rolls up Beretta with a double-leg takedown and scores the pinfall to keep the titles.

ROH WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP FOUR CORNERS ELIMINATION MATCH – SHANE TAYLOR vs. SILAS YOUNG (with Beer City Bruiser)  vs. PUNISHMENT MARTINEZ vs. ROH WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION KENNY KING

Punishment Martinez has a posse that worships him.

Silas Young has the Bruiser. Shane Taylor don’t need no damn body. Kenny King has…well, he is from Vegas…

King and Young are the first two in as King isn’t content to let others fight his battles (nor take his title without his involvement). Young comes up short in the opening exchange, so he brings in Martinez to destroy King for him. King is hip to this and brings in Taylor to let the big men tear each other apart and smooth his road to retention. The two go outside as Young gets into the dive business with them. King takes down Martinez then shows Young and Taylor how diving is done. Martinez won’t be outdone and springs onto all of them on the outside!

Back inside, King takes Martinez down from the top before Young and Taylor join the fray. A game of attrition ensues and King is the first up and on the offensive against all three. King looks to make sure no one’s involved in a decision, but is wearing himself down against three bigger opponents as he does. Taylor picks a clean target in Martinez but Martinez will not succumb to the greater size of Taylor. First elimination comes when Martinez hits a Twisting Senton on Taylor for the pinfall.

King and Young realize Martinez they need to take out the bigger man in a hurry.

However, Young – and Bruiser – take advantage of the opportunity to take King out – with a beer bottle to the head. Second Elimination comes when Young pins King after King has a beer bottle broken over his head by Beer City Bruiser.

Martinez and Young realize one of them is about to be the new champion but that they have to take the other out first. Martinez and Young throw bombs and big moves outside and back in the ring, desperate to win. Young has a target in Martinez’s hurt ribs and hones in on them to take the bigger man’s oxygen away from him. The strategy is enough for the final elimination. Finish comes when Silas Young hits Misery on Punishment Martinez for the pinfall and the Ring of Honor World Television Championship.

A video package reminds us that Bully Ray’s career was thought to be over at one point, but he’s after vengeance and violence

NEW YORK STREET FIGHT – THE BRISCOES (JAY & MARK) vs. BULLY RAY & TOMMY DREAMER

Violence and weapons are the order of the day as all four start out fast and furious. The legends of Hardcore are on their home turf (New York City) and so are the Briscoes (Ring of Honor). Jay and Mark are on the wrong end of chairs (because, ECW). The Briscoes go for kendo sticks and Dreamer and Bully respond.

The Briscoes succumb to The Force as well as the kitchen sink. However, Jay and Mark show Bully and Dreamer they can fight just as well as anyone from Philadelphia, busting open Bully Ray to make their statement. The exclamation point is signed with a cheese grater to Bully Ray’s forehead.

Jay and Mark want more than to just beat Bully and Dreamer at their specialty – they’re looking to put them out for good. A chair is stomped on Dreamer’s neck and another chair is smashed into Bully’s face. However, Dreamer and Ray won’t go down without a fight. Bully returns – fittingly enough – with a 3D onto a table. as Bully and Dreamer divide and conquer, Bully looks to have Jay done for, but Jay survives a splash through a table. Bully wants the Briscoes to know who he is by trying to light a table on fire. The Briscoes show the power of blood brotherhood over brothers in arms. Finish comes when the Briscoes hit Bully Ray with the 3D, followed by the Froggy Bow by Mark, for the pinfall victory.

A video of the top 5 moments from FInal Battle History is shown. Number one – fittingly – is Austin Aries ending the 21-month World Championship reign of Samoa Joe.

Ian Riccaboni brings out the Women of Honor for the announcement that, in 2018, Ring of Honor will crown the first Women of Honor Championship! The tournament is set to begin on January 20, 2018.

ROH WORLD SIX MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS – ROH WORLD SIX MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS ADAM PAGE & THE YOUNG BUCKS vs. FLIP GORDON, DRAGON LEE, & TITAN

Scorpio Sky, friend of Flip Gordon, is on commentary. We’ll see if this becomes important later.

Titan and Adam Page start off before Flip Gordon has his chance to get his comeuppance for the pranks played by the Bucks.

Dragon Lee and Titan, also having faced the Bucks before, look to show they can fly just as well as the Jackson brothers. Each man knows each other well as ego takes command. Each man looks to fly higher and faster than the other until the Bucks end the debate.

Back in the ring, The Bucks throw a Superkick Party to take control of the match. The duo come close to scoring the Meltzer Driver but Gordon cuts the party short. Titan and Lee are singled out and taken out as the Club proves that, under the brash exterior, they can be as vicious as they come.

Once Lee and Titan are gone, Gordon is the last to fall. Finish comes when The Young Bucks and Adam Page hit a Rite of Passage Indytaker on Flip Gordon, scoring the pinfall.

After the match, Scorpio Sky is checking on Gordon when The Addiction return to attack the Bullet Club. Sky likes this idea and joins in, giving us new Six-Man Championship contenders as well as a new alliance.

It is main event time.

ROH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – ROH WORLD CHAMPION “THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE” CODY (with Brandi Rhodes) vs. DALTON CASTLE (with The Boys)

GNN BREAKING NEWS ALERT: Cody is now blond.

Castle wants Cody to know he can wrestle entirely too well to be the “novelty act” Cody claims he is. Meanwhile, Cody wants to end it early and give himself an easy night. Cody only seems overconfident, however, as he’s not to take anyone lightly. Cody is using impact strikes and surprising power to daze Castle and keep him down. Cody does take the time, however, to nod to Daniel Bryan.

Cody does not get a submission and, seemingly frustrated, takes the fight outside. Once there, The Boys get involved, as does Cody’s wife.

Referee Todd Sinclair ejects Brandi and The Boys, evening the playing field for both men. Cody digs deep in his underhanded bag of tricks, but eats the ringpost outside and begins to bleed. Castle almost celebrates more than takes advantage and pays for it when Cody evades a corner attack and kicks Castle to the outside. A countout is almost as good as a pinfall but Cody goes outside regardless to inflict more punishment, angry at having blood drawn. Castle suplexes him and takes full control but Sinclair is knocked down and out. Castle gets the Julie Newmar submission and Cody taps – with no referee in sight.

Cody regains bearings and hits the Cross Rhodes for the finish – but Castle is out at 2! Cody is now breaking out every trick, every move he can think of but Castle’s not staying down. In fact, his determination won’t be overcome. Finish comes when Dalton Castle hits the Bangarang on Cody for the pinfall victory and the Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Championship.
