TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JAN 4th: The Finger Poke of Doom

DATELINE: JAN 4, 1999 – THE GEORGIA DOME – ATLANTA, GA

During the main event of Monday Nitro,  WCW World Heavyweight Champion Kevin Nash, the Wolfpac faction of the New World Order had come out to answer the challenge of  Hollywood Hogan, the leader of the Hollywood faction of the nWo. Thats’ when an event occured that had the wrestling world buzzing… and NOT in a good way.

Nash-Hogan-finger-poke-gifs-001.0The splinter Wolfpac faction had embraced babyfaces Lex Luger and Sting and were receiving massive reactions from the crowd. Nash had ridden that wave of momentum into Starrcade 1998, where he defeated Bill Goldberg to end ‘The Streak’ and capture the gold.

Nash and the nWo Red & Black had taken advantage in the feud between the factions, and Hogan had been away from WCW, supposedly retired from wrestling.

The match turned out to be not much of a match at all: Hogan would poke Nash in the chest with his index finger, prompting Nash to dramatically take a bump to the mat and allow Hogan to pin him.

The victory marked the reunion of both nWo factions into one villainous group, and got a stern reaction from the audience in attendance. In the meantime, much of the television audience didn’t see it.

Following a regular WCW practice, Eric Bischoff had instructed announcer Tony Schiavone to give away the taped results of Monday Night RAW.

When Schiavone told the live TV audience that Mankind had won his first WWF World title and then quipped, “that’ll put asses in seats”, viewers made the switch. And symbolically for WCW, the Monday Night Wars audience never really returned.
