TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JAN 5th: An Intercontinental Title in the Far East

DATELINE: JAN 5, 2011 – TOKYO, JAPAN

New Japan Pro Wrestling commissions the new IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

NJPW officially announced a United States tour, titled NJPW Invasion Tour 2011: Attack on East Coast, in January—- announcing shows for May 13 in Rahway, New Jersey, May 14 in New York City and May 15 in Philadelphia. It was also announced that during the tour, the first Intercontinental title would be awarded. MVP would win the tournament on May 15th in Philly, and be the first man to wear the crown.

The title was initially considered a secondary championship, much like WWE’s Intercontinental Championship. In recent years, however, it has been viewed by some observers as to close to, or on par, with the IWGP title, itself.
