TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JAN 26th: A Titanic Turn at the Tapings in Tampa

DATELINE: JAN 26, 1987 – THE SUNDOME – TAMPA, FL

The WWF films the famous Piper’s Pit segment that saw Andre the Giant challenge for the title, turn on Hulkamania and tear the crucifix from Hulk Hogan’s chest.

To start the segment, Jesse Ventura is out with what he says is a HUGE surprise. Hulk Hogan is then introduced first by Piper, followed by Ventura bringing out André. Piper and Hogan are shocked.

André was led by longtime rival Bobby Heenan. Heenan says that he’s now representing Andre and accuses Hogan of getting close to Andre just so he wouldn’t have to defend his title against him. As Hogan tries to reason with with The Giant, Andre completes his turn on the Hulkster. He challenges Hogan to a match for the WWF World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania III, and rips off his Hulkamania T-shirt and crucifix.

Hogan, left wounded on the set with Roddy Piper, is left to pick up the crucifix… and the pieces of what has just happened. With the assault from Andre causing his chest to bleed, the Hulkster accepts the challenge.

The Hogan-Andre segment of Piper’s Pit would eventually be broadcast in the first week of February, 1987.
