TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… FEB 6th: A Shootout in Texas

DATELINE: FEB. 6, 1990 – MEMORIAL COLISEUM – CORPUS CHRISTI, TX

WCW presents Clash of the Champions X: Texas Shootout, featuring The Horsemen team of Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson, and Ric Flair defeating Gary Hart International (Buzz Sawyer, The Dragon Master, and The Great Muta) in a steel cage match.

Sting had begun the night as the fourth member of the Horsemen, and was originally scheduled to be part of the match. However, after earning a shot at Flair’s title, he was given an ultimatum: relinquish it, or his spot in the group. When The Stinger refused, he was unceremoniously kicked out, and replaced in the match with Ole Anderson.

An unfortunate set of circumstances would then occur: After the match, Sting climbed the cage to try to get to Flair, but injured his knee during the brawl. He would be out of action several months before returning at The Great American Bash to defeat Flair and win his first World championship.
