TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… FEB 8th: Morales is The King of New York

DATELINE: FEB 8, 1971 – MADISON SQUARE GARDEN – NEW YORK, NY

Pedro Morales climbs to the top of the mountain in the Biggest City in the World, when he takes the WWWF heavyweight title from Ivan Koloff.

Koloff hadn’t had the belt for long; it had been just 21 days since he silenced the Garden crowd with his shocking defeat of the once-unbeatable Bruno Sammartino. After years of The Italian Superman’s dominance in The Big Apple, the WWWF was looking for a new standardbearer, and Morales was it.

Morales would hold on to the title for a whopping 1,027 days, before losing it to Stan Stasiak on December 1, 1973.
