DATELINE: FEB 18, 1985 – MADISON SQUARE GARDEN – NEW YORK, NY
The World Wrestling Federation & MTV present The War to Settle the Score, a cross-promotional event that featured Hulk Hogan defending the WWF World Heavyweight Championship against “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
Hogan would retain the title, after Piper got disqualified, in the only match from the live card that was actually aired on MTV.
The broadcast followed The Brawl to End it All in July of 1984, another WWF-MTV co-branded production, both centering around the “Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Connection”. At the time, the exposure helped the WWF cross over into mainstream pop culture, and provided an impetus for the company’s boom period of the mid-80’s.
The show would be MTV’s highest-rated program up to that point, but future projects would not be in the works. With MTV reportedly wanting part ownership of of the World Wrestling Federation as negotiations for future productions were discussed— Vince McMahon would instead sign a contract with NBC and begin airing Saturday Night’s Main Event, three months later.
