Aiding and abetting Sami Callihan’s crusade of violence in Impact Wrestling are a pair of brothers – Dave and Jake Crist – who have teetered between brilliance and insanity inside the ring for 14 years.
“When it comes to styles, I like to feel like I’m doing what Bruce Lee did with his martial arts – he created his own style,” Jake Crist told thegorillaposition.com recently in an exclusive interview. “I feel that’s what we’re doing with oVe and the controlled chaos that you see on TV.”
The former Irish Airborne first made their names in their native state of Ohio, teaming – and then feuding – in Les Thatcher’s Heartland Wrestling Association. A bloody best-of-seven war erupted between the two and gave Ohio fans a taste of what the world was about to see.
After a year spent in Ring of Honor, chaos was born in Combat Zone Wrestling. Jake and his brother allied themselves with Callihan and his wife Nevaeh to form Ohio Is 4 Killers, the precursor to the violent band of misfits now seen on Pop TV as oVe.
The trio has cut a swath of savagery through Impact that started with LAX. The campaign against The Latin American Xchange of Homicide, Ortiz and Santana ended in “Barbed Wire Massacre III” – a match Impact had to relegate to Twitch.tv due to its bloody sadism.
Crist, however, has fond memories of the match and where it ranks in his career.
“I think it was very unique,” Crist said. “I got to do it with my brother, I got to do it with my best friend. I have to rank that #1 for me. A lot of people didn’t like the amount of blood but I think that’s what made it more unique.”
What makes oVe so dangerous isn’t just reveling in anarchy and ferocity. The “controlled chaos” Crist refers to lies in the fact that, with almost a decade and a half of experience under his belt, there’s nothing Crist cannot do in the ring.
“I can go out there and have a 60-minute Iron Man match if you want,” Crist said. “I can have a no-rope Barbed Wire [match] – I can pretty much do it all.”
