TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… MARCH 14th: Blood In, Blood Out

DATELINE: MAR 14, 1999 – FREEDOM HALL – LOUISVILLE, KY

At WCW Uncensored 1999, Ric Flair defeats Hollywood Hogan by pinfall in a first blood, steel cage match to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, despite the fact that both men bled during the course of match.

Flair bled first, yet referee Charles Robinson never stopped the match, inexplicably saying that it was caused by ‘incidental contact’. Then, plenty of chicanery followed: Arn Anderson, Flair’s son David, and even a tire iron being involved in the confusing finish. Eventually, Flair won when an unconscious Hogan’s shoulders were down, while The Nature Boy had him in the figure four leglock.

With the win, Flair not only grabbed the title, but also control of WCW, in what was an attempt at a double turn. Hogan had actually ‘hulked up’ during the match, to the surprising delight of the audience. Flair would use his new role as President of WCW to run roughshod over the company in storyline, before his eventual ouster.
