TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… MARCH 16th: Mick Foley lends an Ear

DATELINE: MARCH 16, 1994 – MUNICH, GERMANY

Cactus Jack loses an ear during his match with Big Van Vader, when he becomes entangled in the ropes during a ‘hangman spot’.

WCW had been using elevator cables wrapped in rubber instead of actual ropes, so when Jack (Mick Foley) was tied up by the head, the circulation had begun to be cut off from his brain. When he finally freed himself,  2/3 of his ear was torn loose in the process.

The ear was actually picked up by the referee and put on ice, and Foley had surgery to reattach the cartilage to his head so that a full reconstruction would be possible.
