TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… MARCH 23rd: Austin Won’t Give Up

DATELINE: MARCH 23, 1997 – ROSEMONT HORIZON – CHICAGO, IL


At WrestleMania 13, Bret Hart defeats Steve Austin via referee stoppage in a submission match, when Stone Cold refuses to give up, but passes out from loss of blood.

Ken Shamrock was the special referee for the match, which was essentially a ‘double turn’, with Hart getting nearly booed out of the building, and Austin now a fan favorite. To top it off, Hart continued to attack Austin after the match.

Stone Cold walked to the back on his own power, refusing any medial assistance, much to the delight of the crowd, who had now adopted him as their anti-hero. The Austin Era had unofficially begun.
