TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… MARCH 26th: The Last Nitro

MARCH 26, 2001 – CLUB LA VELA – PANAMA CITY, FL

After having been purchased by the WWF, World Championship Wrestling broadcasts the final episode of Nitro from a beach in Panama City.

The 288th episode of the franchise, it was intended as a “season finale” before WCW was to go dark for a few weeks. At least, according to former Executive VP Eric Bischoff, who was in talks to return and buy the company. Just as the deal was taking shape, however, Turner Broadcasting executive Jamie Kellner announced that Nitro and all WCW programming was immediately canceled on both TNT and TBS.

When Bischoff couldn’t secure any other television deal, WWF owner Vince McMahon swooped in and essentially purchased his competition. On Nitro that night, McMahon would appear on WCW programming in a simulcast on TNN and TNT, announcing the purchase.
