TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… MARCH 31st: The Birth of WrestleMania

DATELINE: MARCH 31, 1985 – MADISON SQUARE GARDEN – NEW YORK, NY

The World Wrestling Federation presents the inaugural version of WrestleMania on closed-circuit television, and in front of a live audience of 19,121. It was given the tagline, ‘The Greatest Wrestling Event of All Time!

HiqhY5wThe event featured scores of celebrities, particularly those with ties to the New York entertainment scene. Names like Liberace, The Rockettes, and Billy Martin were involved.

Pop star Cyndi Lauper, fully invested in WrestleMania due to being the central figure of the “Rock ‘n’ Wrestling’ Connection”, would be in the corner of Wendi Richter.

With the MTV crowd firmly behind her, Richter would go on to defeat The Fabulous Moolah for the Women’s World title, and celebrate with Lauper.

But most of the hype around the card surrounded a star-studded main event, with WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan and A-Team star Mr. T defeating Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff.

With his unique look and status as a star of the wildly successful television show, T was one of the most recognizable people in the world in 1985. As part of the build-up, Hogan and Mr. T even co-hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live the week of WrestleMania.
