TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… APRIL 2nd: Steamboat and Flair Clash in New Orleans

DATELINE – APRIL 2, 1989 – THE SUPERDOME – NEW ORLEANS, LA

At Clash of the Champions VI, Ricky Steamboat defeats Ric Flair in a best-of-three falls match to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. The match is considered among the greatest of all time, and the jewel of that year’s ‘Steamboat-Flair Trilogy’.

Later replays would show that Flair’s foot had been under the bottom rope in the third fall. Because of the controversial finish, WCW granted The Nature Boy one last rematch at WrestleWar 1989. Flair would go on to defeat Steamboat at that event, on May 7th, in Nashville, TN, to regain the Ten Pounds of Gold

The Wrestling Observer newsletter gave this Clash of Champions VI  title showdown the 1989 Match of the Year award, despite the fact that the card, itself, drew poorly. In the massive, 70,000-seat Superdome, poor promotion of the event led to a little less than 8,000 being in attendance.

Clash of Champions VI  (minus three of the matches that originally aired on the live broadcast) is available on the WWE Network
