TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… APRIL 27th: Lawler gets a Haircut

DATELINE: APRIL 27, 1987 – MID SOUTH COLISEUM – MEMPHIS, TN

Austin Idol defeats Jerry Lawler in a hair versus hair steel cage match to win the AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship

In what would be remembered as one of the hottest angles in the history of Memphis wrestling, Lawler also had his head shaved by Wildfire Tommy Rich –  who hid under the ring all day to help Idol beat The King.

The fans in attendance were so shocked and angered by the turn of events that some of them grabbed and shook the cage. The incident is noted as generating some of the most heat in a territory that was historically known for its wild, emotional barn burners.
