TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… MAY 2nd: Hennig takes the AWA crown

DATELINE: MAY 2, 1987 – THE COW PALACE – SAN FRANCISCO, CA


At SuperClash II, Curt Hennig defeats Nick Bockwinkel to win the AWA World title, when he receives assistance from Larry Zbyszko.

Late in the bout, Zbyszko came to ringside and passed a roll of quarters to Hennig, who used them to knock out Bockwinkel for the victory while the referee was distracted.

It would be the end of Bockwinkel’s final title reign, after officially holding the AWA World Championship a total of four times and a cumulative 2,990 days.
