TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… MAY 26TH: Turnbuckle Troubles on the Turnpike

DATELINE: MAY 26, 1987 – THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE

The Iron Sheik  and “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan are arrested on drug possession charges after Duggan is pulled over for suspicion of driving under the influence.

In the legal fallout, Duggan was charged with possession of marijuana and drinking alcohol while driving, and received a conditional discharge. Sheik (aka Khosrow Vaziri) was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana and ended up getting one year of probation.

From the company’s perspective, it was a PR calamity: The two men were feuding in WWF storylines at the time. Hacksaw and Sheik arrived for that night’s house show, and did not initially tell management. By the next day, however, the media storm had started, and the incident nearly led to Duggan being terminated.
