SEPTEMBER 2, 2002 – MONDAY NIGHT RAW – MILWAUKEE, WI
Triple H is awarded the famed ‘Big Gold Belt’ (re-christened the WWE World Heavyweight Championship) by Eric Bischoff.
The championship and physical belt are re-introduced because Undisputed champion Brock Lesnar had signed an exclusive contract to Smackdown, taking the title with him.
Triple H was deemed the champion based on winning a #1 contender’s match for the Undisputed WWE Championship the previous week over the Undertaker. With RAW needing a champion of its own, the World title would serve as its ultimate prize. The WWE would operate in this format, with two world champions, until December 2013 when the belts were once again unified by Randy Orton.
