DATELINE: NOV. 21, 1988 – ATLANTA, GA
Ted Turner officially completes the deal to make him the new owner of Jim Crockett Promotions, the largest NWA affiliate in the country.
Turner renames Crockett Promotions, re-branding it as World Championship Wrestling. The company would eventually secede from the NWA in 1993.
When Turner’s company merged with Time Warner and AOL over the course of the next decade, he would lose a major grip on his entertainment holdings, including WCW. The wrestling company would become part of a larger, corporate conglomerate, until being sold off to their rivals, the World Wrestling Federation and Vince McMahon in the Spring of 2001.
