TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… DEC 26th: A Gritty Title Match at Starrcade

DATELINE: DEC 26, 1988 – THE SCOPE – NORFOLK, VA

World Championship Wrestling presents Starrcade 1988: True Gritt, the company’s premiere yearly event.

It would be the sixth incarnation of Starrcade, but the first under the WCW banner. Ted Turner had completed a purchase of the former parenting company, Jim Crockett Promotions, earlier in the month.

The title bout featured Lex Luger challenging the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair. It is considered the main event of the card, even though it was followed by a Bunkhouse Battle Royal to close the show.

In an epic battle, Luger applied the Torture Rack to the titleholder. Unfortunately, his knees buckled, and Flair fell on top of him. Flair then used the ropes for leverage, and pinned The Total package to retain the belt.
