KAYFABE THEATER: The WWF Super Bowl Commercial

1999 – The World Wrestling Federation rolls the dice on a premium Super Bowl ad that explains their new ‘Attitude’ to the mainstream audience.

The WWF was one of about 30 companies who paid an average price of $1.6 million for each of the 58 half-minute commercial slots on the Super Bowl telecast from Miami Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999. (The same spot today is priced at approximately $5 million)

The ad received mixed reviews, although most wrestling fans embraced it for it’s campiness and tongue-in-cheek approach to criticism of the company’s change in direction.
