TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… APRIL 24th: New Japan goes to the Dome

DATELINE: APRIL 24, 1989 – THE TOKYO DOME – TOKYO, JAPAN

New Japan Pro Wrestling hold its first event in the Tokyo Dome, drawing an attendance of 53,800. The revolutionary structure had only been open for a little over a year at the time.

Big Van Vader would win a tournament final to capture the IWGP Heavyweight title by defeating Shinya Hashimoto.

Also on the card, Salman Hashimikov pinned Bam Bam Bigelow, and Jushin Liger bested Kuniaki Kobayashi.  The legendary Antonio Inoki would lose the IWGP Martial Arts title by knockout to Shota Chochyashvili.
