TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… APRIL 26th: Hansen breaks Bruno’s neck

DATELINE: APRIL 26, 1976 – MADISON SQUARE GARDEN – NEW YORK, NY

Stan Hansen defeats WWWF Champion Bruno Sammartino via referee stoppage due to excessive bleeding. The title did not change hands due to the match not being won by pinfall or submission.

The storyline explanation was that Hansen’s lariat broke Bruno’s neck, however, the injury actually occurred when Hansen accidentally dropped Sammartino on his head. After two months, Sammartino returned and faced Hansen in a rematch on June 25, 1976 at Shea Stadium.
