TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… AUGUST 28th: Ultimate Warrior wins the IC title from Rick Rude

DATELINE: AUGUST 28, 1989 – MEADOWLANDS ARENA – EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ

In front of 20,000 fans at Summer Slam, The Ultimate Warrior defeats Rick Rude to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship.

Rude had defeated The Warrior at WrestleMania V, when he pinned him with the help of outside interference to win the title. Bobby Heenan, got involved in the match, holding down Warrior’s foot from outside the ring as the ref made the ill-gotten three count.

This would be the second (and final) Intercontinental title reign for The Warrior. He would hold the championship until April 1, 1990, when he vacated it after defeating Hulk Hogan for the WWF World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania VI.
