TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… DEC 1st: Stan the Man becomes The Champ

DATELINE: DEC. 1, 1973 – PHILADELPHIA, PA

thStan Stasiak defeats Pedro Morales to win the WWWF Heavyweight Championship. The win was considered a stunning upset, as it ended Pedro’s title run at an astounding 1,027 days.

There appeared to be a double pin to conclude the match, and the winner was never officially announced in the building due to fear of a riot. Stasiak only held the title for nine days, before losing it to Bruno Sammartino, who would go on to hold the title until 1977.
