TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… FEB 20th: Backlund wins the Belt

DATELINE: FEB 20, 1978 – NEW YORK, NY

Bob Backlund defeats Superstar Billy Graham to win the WWWF Championship.

Graham, who had held the belt for 296 days, had one foot on the bottom rope at the conclusion of the match. However, the referee didn’t see it, and made the three-count anyway.

Except for a one-week title reign by Antonio Inoki, Backlund would hold the WWWF championship for the next five years, before losing it to the Iron Sheik in 1983.

  1. Except for a one-week title reign by Antonio Inoki, Backlund would hold the WWWF championship for the next five years, before losing it to the Iron Sheik in 1983.

The above title win by Inoki was never recognized by WWE so it kind of didn’t happen. Inoki returned the belt and it became “vacant” for a very short period of time, but Backlund went on business as usual when he returned to the U.S; as a champion. Fans stateside were none the wiser. But Backlund also “lost” it against Greg Valentine but only in New York, but continued to defend it in the other cities for about three weeks until “regaining” the world championship against Valentine in MSG. Weird, I know.
