TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… Feb 7th: Larry Z rules the AWA

DATELINE: FEB 7, 1989 – ST. PAUL, MN

Larry Zbyszko eliminates Tom Zenk in a 20-man battle royal to win the vacant AWA World Heavyweight Championship

Jerry Lawler had been the AWA titleholder previously, but was stripped of the belt when the promotion ended their working relationship with Memphis-based Continental Wrestling Association

Zbyzsko would lose the title briefly to Mr. Saito, before regaining it and reigning as champion until being stripped on December 12, 1990. Larry Z had moved on to WCW by then, but would end up being the final, recognized AWA champion.

The American Wrestling Association would eventually fold in early 1991.
