TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JAN 16th: Benoit doesn’t want the Belt

DATELINE: JAN 16, 2000 – FIRSTAR CENTER – CINCINNATI, OH

Chris Benoit defeats Sid Vicious by submission to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, with Arn Anderson as the special referee.

The replay the next night on WCW Monday Nitro showed Sid had one of his legs under the bottom rope, so Double A explained that he had made a mistake and the title change was voided.

In reality, Benoit had grown angry with WCW management, and was demanding his release. Despite being crowned the champion, he and fellow wrestlers Eddie Guerrero, Perry Saturn and Dean Malenko would depart for the WWF the very next day.

The disputed finish was a way to vacate the title when Benoit left the company. Sid would go on to regain the belt on January 24th.
