DATELINE: JULY 10, 1988 – BALTIMORE ARENA – BALTIMORE, MD
At The Great American Bash ’88: The Price for Freedom, Ric Flair defeats Lex Luger via referee stoppage to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, after Luger is bleeding too heavily to continue.
It was one of the more controversial finishes of the era: Luger had Flair in the Human Torture Rack and appeared on the verge of victory, when the bout was stopped by the Maryland State Athletic Commission, awarding the match to Flair.
Also of note: The 1988 event would mark the first time the Bash would be available on pay-per-view.
