TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JULY 7th: The New World Order is Formed

DATELINE: JULY 7TH, 1996 – DAYTONA BEACH, FL

In one of the biggest moments in wrestling history, Hulk Hogan turns heel and joins with Kevin Nash & Scott Hall to form what would become the New World Order.

Hogan had been wrestling’s biggest babyface star, but his act had worn thin with fans. His turn to ‘the dark side’ – and subsequent speech –  would set off the nWo angle and provide the impetus for wrestling’s 1990s “boom period”, ‘The Monday Night Wars’.

Although the nWo would later be criticized for running too long or having too many members in the group, its influence in the professional wrestling world is still being felt today. Newer factions have adopted their styl;e and mannerisms, while The Bullet Club has taken it one step further – as an almost a modern-day homage to the New World Order.
