TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JUNE 11TH: RVD & John Cena take it to the Extreme

DATELINE – JUNE 11, 2006 – HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM – NEW YORK

ECWonenightstand2006World Wrestling Entertainment hosted ECW One Night Stand 2006, the second pay-per-view paying homage to the hardcore promotion. It would be used as the kickoff to the company’s reboot, ECW on Sci-Fi, which premiered two nights later.

The main event featured a bit of a culture shock and was the highlight of the night, as Rob Van Dam defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship. The New York crowd was solidly behind Van Dam, while screaming profanity at Cena and nearly booing him out of the building. After multiple referees were knocked out of the action, former ECW owner Paul Heyman made the three count.
