TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JUNE 29TH: Stan Hansen Forfeits the AWA World Title

DATELINE:  JUNE 29TH, 1986 – DENVER, CO

Nick Bockwinkel is officially awarded the AWA World Heavyweight Championship by forfeit when Stan Hansen refuses to appear for a scheduled title defense.

In reality, Stan Hansen had refused to defend the title the night before, instead taking the championship belt with him on a tour for All Japan Pro Wrestling over AWA. Hansen was booked to defend the title on a series of shows there in July, but was scheduled to lose it beforehand.

In response to his being stripped of the AWA world title, Hansen ran over the AWA world title belt with his truck and mailed the remains to Verne Gagne.
