TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JUNE 2nd: The Honky Tonk Man captures the Intercontinental Title

DATELINE: JUNE 2, 1987 – BUFFALO, NY


The Honky Tonk Man defeats Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat at a television taping to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship.

The shocking upset would air on the June 12th episode of WWF Superstars.

Honky Tonk Man would go on to hold the title until Summerslam 1988, a span of 454 days. It’s the longest in the history of the championship, surpassing Pedro Morales’ run of 425 days from November 1981 to January 1983.
