Don’t look now, but Kofi Kingston’s storybook WWE Championship reign could soon be coming to an end.
When the heart and soul of The New Day beat Daniel Bryan for the WWE title at WrestleMania 35, it was one of the greatest and most memorable moments in WrestleMania history. But most know by now that Kingston’s skyrocketing popularity and massive push as the top babyface on SmackDown was never WWE’s intention. That spot was originally reserved for the then-Mustafa Ali, who was a victim of really bad timing that left him injured, without a WrestleMania storyline and getting replaced by Kingston at the biggest show of the year.
Never in a million years could WWE have imagined what would happen next: Kingston became arguably the most popular act in all of WWE (or at least a close second to Becky Lynch) and then became just the fourth black world champion in WWE history with his victory over Bryan at Mania.
