DATELINE: APRIL 17, 1994 – ROSEMONT HORIZON – CHICAGO, IL
World Championship Wrestling presents Spring Stampede, with a main event featuring WCW World Heavyweight champion Ric Flair putting the gold on the line, against his greatest challenger, Ricky Steamboat.
The build-up to the match was that Steamboat had defeated Flair in the same city, five years before, for the NWA World title. Video in the weeks leading up to the show drew off of the two men’s long and intertwining history.
Because of this, Stampede ’94 ended up being an overall success for the promotion, drawing 12,200 on the strength of that classic rivalry.
The match itself would end in a draw/no-contest, due to a double pin. The title was eventually held up when it was found that Steamboat, who had Flair locked in a double chickenwing submission, fell to the mat with both men’s shoulders down as the three count was made. WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel then ruled that the pair would face off to settle the situation on an episode of WCW Saturday Night.
