TODAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY… JAN 15th: Big John wins the Rumble

DATELINE: JAN 15, 1989 – THE SUMMIT – HOUSTON, TX

The World Wrestling Federation presents the Royal Rumble in the PPV debut of the event, as the previous one was broadcast as a television special on the USA Network.

Big John Studd wins the Royal Rumble match, eliminating “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase at the conclusion. The victory for Studd was somewhat of a going-away party; his last match with the WWF was just a few months later on June 4, 1989. He would pass away on March 20, 1995, due to complications from Hodgkin’s Disease.
