WOMAN ON FIRE – 07.25.2018: How DDP Yoga is Changing My Life

By Kim Artlip, Columnist

Who hasn’t heard of DDP Yoga? It’s all the rage among athletes – with testimonials from some of the biggest names in wrestling such as Goldust, Scott Hall, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Chris Jericho, Ryback, AJ Styles, Titus O’Neil, Shane Helms, Austin Aries and Sami Zayn singing its praises.

Oddly enough for all its popularity it didn’t exactly catch on when in 2014, creator Diamond Dallas Page appeared on the fifth season of ABC Television’s “Shark Tank” looking for support for DDP Yoga, but no one on the panel of investors bit. You know they are kicking themselves so hard now. Seriously.

But if you come to my house, you will discover “DDP” is my virtual coach, torturer and symbol of hope. Although we have never met yet, he encourages me, motivates me and I yell at the screen (so much) at him during workouts. After suffering a back injury in the late 1990’s, Page said doctors told him his career was over. Page wouldn’t have it. He discovered the healing power of yoga from watching his wife working out, which got him back into fighting shape and extended his career far longer that anyone would have imagined.

I’ll be honest and say that I had pretty much given up hope of rehabbing my back which has degraded to the point that I was using a cane and walker but I am not going down without a fight. Like an addict, I had to hit rock bottom in order to have the push I needed to commit myself to the workouts. Like so many others, I came across the viral video of Arthur Boorman’s amazing transformation from partially disabled, depressed and overweight Gulf War vet who could hardly walk to a fit and fiercely optimistic yoga teacher who lost 140 lbs and gained his life back and became a phenomenon on the internet

But you know what? I had the tools and I didn’t act for two years. I truly don’t know what was missing for me that I didn’t push myself harder to improve my health and wellness. I had the dvds, meal plan, meal prep containers and even created an entire space to work out but I didn’t do it like I should have done. In my mind, oh I’ll get around to it and that day just didn’t come until recently when I realized I really had no options left. My personal rock bottom had arrived and when I dried my tears, I started making changes.

Page, who is the first to say that this is not “traditional yoga,” goes out of his way to insert man-cred and his own spin. He renames poses (warrior I becomes road warrior, urdhva hastasana becomes touchdown, child’s pose becomes safety zone, etc.) and often inserts his dynamic resistance curls and punches, plus moves like the “hulk it out.” He’s so damn personable that I can’t help but talk to the monitor during workouts and laugh at his jokes.

DDP-Yoga-Workshops-2016Now I know I’m sounding like an infomercial but I have to say that when you take the time to look at the incredible results and comments from guys who were practically bedridden and are back in the ring, doing concerts and living life, you know it’s working. I think one of their shirts I saw summed it up best – “My History Is Not My Destiny.”

I’m on a long road to rehabilitation and personal fitness and I hope that you guys out there that read this column will keep me on track and hold me accountable. It’s baby steps but every layer is making life a bit more bearable, giving me quality of life and decreasing my pain. I want to be there at my own shows enjoying myself and working the room. I don’t ever want to spend another show going from chair to chair grimacing in pain ever again.

Who knows, one day maybe I will have the opportunity to work out with man himself. That would be a dream come true to be feeling all feisty and fit while doing selfie with him doing the diamond cutter. I digress but still that would totally rock so until then ignite your fire, and follow your dreams.
