DATELINE: AUGUST 2, 1992 – BALTIMORE, MD
Ron Simmons defeats Big Van Vader with a running powerslam to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.
By defeating the seemingly unstoppable champion, Simmons became the first African-American to hold a major world title in wrestling.
Simmons’ victory would be aired two weeks later on August 16th.
He would go on to reign as the titleholder for a span of 150 days, before dropping the belt back to Vader in December, (ironically in Baltimore again).
