DATELINE: MARCH 19, 1995 – ‘THE OPEN ROAD’ – TUPELO, MS
At WCW’s first Uncensored pay-per-view, The Blacktop Bully defeats Dustin Rhodes in a ‘King of the Road’ match, where the two men fought on the flatbed of a moving truck.
Despite spending a large budget to produce the segment, including aerial camera shots from a tracking helicopter, there were a few problems that arose from the contest. The object of the match was to climb to the top of the trailer’s cage and sound a horn positioned there, which Blacktop Bully did to earn the win. However, the action throughout was plodding, due to the difficult setting, and was not well-received by fans or critics.
The match had actually been filmed a few days earlier back in WCW’s home base of Atlanta, and the footage had to be heavily edited in post-production, due to both Rhodes and Bully bleeding. Since the company had a strictly,”no blood” policy at that time, Dustin Rhodes and Blacktop Bully would both be terminated for intentionally blading during this ill-conceived, widely-panned match.
